Funeral services for Justice Joseph A. Rattigan will be Friday in Santa

Rosa, his family announced Monday.

A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of the former state senator and

longtime justice will be at 4 p.m. at St. Eugene's Cathedral. Private burial

will follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Catholic

Charities of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, P.O. Box 4900, Santa Rosa, CA 95402.

Rattigan died Saturday at his Santa Rosa home at age 87, following a long

illness.

A resident of Sonoma County for 58 years, he practiced law in Santa Rosa

before his 1958 election to the California State Senate. He also served 17

California Fair Political Practices Commission.

He retired from public life with more than 30 years of service to the

people of Sonoma County and California, his family said.

He was a native of Washington, D.C., and graduated from Catholic University

of America in 1940 and from Stanford University Law School in 1947. He served

during World War II as a Navy lieutenant and PT boat captain in the

Philippines.

He was a founding member of St. Eugene's, where he will be remembered

Friday.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth ''Betty'' Rattigan; his daughters,

Catharine Kalin and Anne Paine, both of San Francisco; sons Michael Rattigan

of Sacramento, Thomas Rattigan of San Francisco, Patrick Rattigan of Santa

Rosa and Timothy Rattigan of Bellevue, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.
