A pit bull and three pet iguanas were rescued from a fire that burned a

Santa Rosa home Tuesday and left two people homeless.

The fire at 919 Link Lane, between College Avenue and West Ninth Street,

was reported at 2:12 p.m., authorities said.

Harry White, a neighbor, said he rushed down the street to where smoke was

coming from the pink house and broke out a window, fearing someone might be

inside.

He said the pit bull, Carmela, escaped through the window. Firefighters

rescued the iguanas.

Paul Durbin Sr., 33, who rents the home with his wife, Meghan, said he was

on his way to San Francisco to pick her up at the airport when a friend called

to tell him about the fire.

By the time he returned, the home was gutted by flames and smoke. Another

iguana and several geckos perished in the blaze, he said.

Firefighters spent about 10 minutes knocking down the fire, which caused an

estimated $50,000 in damages.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
