Lydia Pense and Cold Blood are Bay Area music pioneers with an amazing history and an exciting future. Lydia and the band debuted when the Fillmore was at its peak as one of the nation’s musical Mecca’s. Owner Bill Graham was so impressed with Lydia’s voice and the sound of the band that he immediately signed Cold Blood to his new record label. During the span of five original late-60’s and early-70’s albums, Lydia Pense and Cold Blood helped, along with Tower of Power, forge their own specific brand of funk, soul, and R&B which came to be know as East Bay Grease. With the success of its five albums, Cold Blood developed a national and international following with such hits as “You Got Me Hummin’,” “Funky on My Back,” “Down to the Bone,” and “I Just Wanna Make Love to You”.
After nearly 25 years, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood have recorded two resurgent CDs and toured extensively to great acclaim. The band's sound today is rooted in its original style, but with a contemporary feel. Backed by a powerful rhythm section and a dynamic horn section, the legendary Lydia Pense continues to deliver an inspiring blend of funk, soul, jazz and blues. Many say she is a cross between Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, combined with a powerhouse, tight horn band, and is sure to be the best recipe for dancing, good times, and a high-energy show!
The award-winning Petaluma High School Jazz Ensemble will get things jumping with a special performance of classic up-tempo big band swing, Latin jazz, bebop, and funk at 8:00 PM. The concert is an all-ages event, and the doors will open at 7:00 PM. Cliff Eveland, PHS Instrumental Music Director, is thrilled to work with Lydia Pense, and is sure that no one will want to miss this opportunity to dance to high-energy soul and funk on the Mystic’s dance floor. “We are raising money to keep our music program operating, but at the same time, putting on a fantastic event for the entire North Bay.”
